Bad company corrupts good morals, a saying that’s left only to those who came up with it. Who hangs around bad company anyway? Who in their right mind will hang around a thief, a murderer, an addict or a slanderer?
What is bad company? Are these those people with descriptions of vices? Are they the people the society taught us not to associate with and not grow to be? Many say that your environment really determines your altitude. The phrase ‘Show me your friends and I will tell exactly who you are’ has been repeated over and again.
I thought this through, ‘The only way to know who I really am is to look at my closest friends; their characters, their addictions, their flaws etc.’ From this I resolved that bad company is not the villains we banish but the ‘angels’ we mingle with every single day. Bad company is anyone who makes you a lesser being and has erected poisonous barriers to restrict your growth.
The ‘friend’ who keeps saying, casually or jokingly ‘You can’t make it’ is bad company. In their defence, ‘Well, it was just another joke.’ The ‘friend’ who leads you astray from from your set plans and positive schedule is your enemy. He who makes you procrastinate tasks is no different from the evil who entices you to what is sweet but leads you to ruin. Modern day liars will talk you off your big goals, modern day murderers will kill your dreams and will be talking on your back fitting good examples of slanderers.
Your friend is who you reflect. We cannot all be perfect but choose friends who strive to make themselves better. In that spirit you too will grow and into someone better. Bad company is contagious, you may also be your friend’s bad company.
