“In a street accident, a woman tried to help the victims but suddenly a nurse came and said… ‘Miss, excuse me! I am a nurse and I can do it better. Step back.. I’ve had a course in first aid and I’m trained in giving first aid and CPR.’ The woman stepped aside and watched the procedure and said, ‘If you need a doctor, I’m just behind you.’ The nurse turned and looked at the woman in dismay. Humility counts! Stay humble. If you want to go far in 2016, you will need to drop your pride and treat people right. Pride only drives people away because it stinks. Enjoy and have a Prosperous 2016.”
The above was a text that made rounds on WhatsApp but very few people were able to relate it to their lives. Some may have said, I do not have pride so that doesn’t apply to me. Others may have said, I am humble, I cannot do such. The text has deeper meaning. It is not just the basic humility and pride thing. The text focuses on a Swahili word; ‘kiherehere’ or ‘kimbelembele’ which cannot be translated to English and if translated, it will lose its deep and true meaning.
“God, I know Njeri is coming over tomorrow just for movies. It’s only movies. Nothing will happen I assure you. She’s my ex I know it’s not right and she doesn’t walk in your ways but it’s just movies. I can do this.”
“Things have been tough but this deal is too good to lose God. Furthermore it’s just once, si ati I will be doing it forever. Yes, it doesn’t please you but you also know I have not been doing so well financially.”
“God, there is no way I will do a Ksh. 5M tender from work and I get no cut. These people pay me peanuts and my boss is harsh and am the most lowly person at work. Am a Christian but at times I have to be enlightened. Kuchanuka. Lazima niwe mjanja or else I die poor.”
“God, yes am the worship leader and the best singer in church but I have to quit, there’s no way am going to handle the pain. Yes my ex Kev going out with Joan. I cannot instruct them on what to do as they say am jealous. Furthermore, Joan is not that attractive. I cannot handle this anymore, I have to have my own peace in life. You get my point God?”
“There are some things I cannot handle God, I was the Head of Marketing, now these people are telling me to do procurement. Yes I can but no. They pay me for marketing and not procurement. I will leave them they see who they will get. God, si you said I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me?
“No God, I cannot help my family members. These people are so nagging. Kwanza when I help one nitakuwa nimejifunga. I will be getting calls from everyone asking me to help them. Yes they are my family but the 1/2kg of sugar I give them in December is enough for them. I rather stick to my friends who bail me out when am broke, who make me happy and who stand with me when am down. Si they are family too?”
“God there are some things I cannot do. Where I am at the moment, I do not have time to go sijui to Mathare and spend time with homeless kids, sijui look for my old friends and spend time with them because we have come from far, sijui my family. I have time for bigger people because you have destined me for greater things and that people be inspired by my achievements. I rather send them a token to show my appreciation but I am destined to be hanging out with bigger people. The who is who because I also want to be great, and you God.”
“God my deals have to work out, they have to. I have to reach my sales target this month. I really have to. Mr. Kimutai has to pay me my debt sasa this month as he promised. People cannot be evading to pay me for this long. Things must work out for me sasa God. I have struggled a lot.”
“Hii sasa imekuwa too much. Kwani God how many times do you want me to forgive? Will I always be vulnerable to people? I now have to stand like a man. Even if I were to count I have forgiven more than the limit, 490 times. Kuna ujinga ingine sasa itanifanya ni lose value. No! Nakataa.”
How many times have you told God what to do? How many times have you ‘fixed’ those Bible verses in your prayers telling God that He said this and that and He must do it? How many times have you regarded yourself as perfect? How many times have you told God, “Hey man, I got this all by myself. You can stay aside on this. I do not need your help.”
Do you know what God does, like that humble doctor he says, “Son, in case you need more help am standing beside you.” But what do we do? At least the nurse above was in guilt and looked at the doctor in dismay but we don’t do that to God. Not even the slightest of thought runs in we that you might not be able to handle what we see so easy to do and we will not need God. We just continue ignoring Him but when EVERYTHING is in a wreck, and I mean every component of the ship, that’s when we go back to God telling Him to please take the wheel.
Have you ever noticed that even when you are giving God the wheel you don’t confess and apologize that you should have given Him in the word go? Do you realize that you just throw the wheel on His face in a way to tell Him that, ‘It was your business in the first place?’
We have devised ways for the word to work for us. We have those specific snippets on our finger tips that promises us good things but not the ones that tell us what is involved for us to acquire riches from above. I might say
The path of the righteous is like the morning sun, shining ever brighter till the full light of day.
For I know the plans I have for you,” declares the Lord, “plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future.
Consider it pure joy, my brothers and sisters, whenever you face trials of many kinds.
Do not fear what you are about to suffer. Behold, the devil is about to throw some of you into prison, that you may be tested, and for ten days you will have tribulation. Be faithful unto death, and I will give you the crown of life.
I may also confront God telling him of how am righteous and how my prayer has a powerful effect as in James 5:16
Therefore confess your sins to each other and pray for each other so that you may be healed. The prayer of a righteous person is powerful and effective.
I will also remind God that He has promised me wealth and He is not fulfilling His promises as in Isaiah 45:3
I will give you hidden treasures, riches stored in secret places, so that you may know that I am the LORD, the God of Israel, who summons you by name.
But it will be so easy for me to forget the He tests Hearts
The crucible is for silver, and the furnace is for gold, and the Lord tests hearts.
The verse that tells me that I will have to be persecuted for me to live a godly will easily pass my mind
2nd Timothy 3:12
In fact, everyone who wants to live a godly life in Christ Jesus will be persecuted
How is gold refined? Isn’t it through a furnace? Why do we want to become gold but we don’t want to go through the furnace? Why do we love shortcuts? Why do we value material wealth that much that when things don’t work our way we pray to God blasting Him with Bible verses (His own word) accusing Him of things undone?
1 Timothy 6:9
Those who want to get rich fall into temptation and a trap and into many foolish and harmful desires that plunge people into ruin and destruction.
Which riches are you looking for? Your own worldly riches? Or riches that come from above? There was a good reason why Jesus taught His disciples how to pray.
7 And when you pray, do not keep on babbling like pagans, for they think they will be heard because of their many words. 8 Do not be like them, for your Father knows what you need before you ask him.
9 “This, then, is how you should pray:
“‘Our Father in heaven,
hallowed be your name,
10 your kingdom come,
your will be done,
on earth as it is in heaven.
11 Give us today our daily bread.
12 And forgive us our debts,
as we also have forgiven our debtors.
13 And lead us not into temptation,
but deliver us from the evil one.
I love this part, ‘And when you pray, do not keep on babbling like pagans, for they think they will be heard because of their many words. 8 Do not be like them, for your Father knows what you need before you ask him.‘ The Bible tells us not to babble like pagans because they think that they will be heard by their many words. Do you think your prayer will be heard and given first priority because of the many verses you will quote? No! The word tells us that He knows what you need before you ask him. This is because He is way smarter and stronger than you are just as in 1st Corinthians 1:25
For the foolishness of God is wiser than human wisdom, and the weakness of God is stronger than human strength.
So how do you perceive God to be? One that forgets and one who should be reminded of the promises He made to you? Patience is key. Know that as you are in the crucible or furnace and as your branches are pruned so that you may grow more, you have to be patient, you have to be humble.
Rejoice in hope, be patient in tribulation, be constant in prayer.
You may think that you have it all because you are in service. You may think that your church will go down to ashes because you left the praise and worship and you are the worship leader? You may think yourself to be so special and unique. You are not irreplaceable. EVERYONE AND EVERYTHING CAN BE REPLACED. God wiped out the earth in Noah’s time. The whole earth. You are just a single being with pride, it happens. The devil’s work is to steal so he just simply steals your humility. What next? How do you react? Do you pray to God or do you walk in pride that you have got all handled? That there are many platforms you can serve? Do you await the Devil’s next move? To kill? The Devil will kill your talent, the very one thing that God used so that He may be glorified in you, your joy, the very one gift that God gave you as you worked for Him and finally, YOUR DESTRUCTION.
What happens next is unfathomable, the one person you looked down onto. The croaky voiced, the one who knew not of the key, the confused one, the one whom you saw had no future in music rises to be the next worship leader because…
1 Corinthians 1:27
But God chose the foolish things of the world to shame the wise; God chose the weak things of the world to shame the strong.
For those who exalt themselves will be humbled, and those who humble themselves will be exalted.
You are not there yet. No one is ever there. There is no social class in Christianity but there is abundant life; a life of absolute peace, joy and one that glories the Lord. You are not your own power, you are not your own wealth, you are not behind that car, that good job, that posh house, those awesome gadgets. God is, because He loves you, because you are under His grace and mercy.
Quit telling God what to do. Quit instructing God on how your life should look like because ‘it is written’. Do not be like the pagans babbling words that God may hear them. You rather say the Lord’s prayer because He knows what you want before you ask Him. In turbulent times, praise God, In good times, praise God too.
The blessing of the LORD makes a person rich, and he adds no sorrow with it.
Better a little with righteousness than much gain with injustice.
Take delight in the LORD, and he will give you the desires of your heart.
Most of all
Keep this Book of the Law always on your lips; meditate on it day and night, so that you may be careful to do everything written in it. Then you will be prosperous and successful.
but whose delight is in the law of the LORD, and who meditates on his law day and night.
How blessed is the man who does not walk in the counsel of the wicked, Nor stand in the path of sinners, Nor sit in the seat of scoffers! But his delight is in the law of the LORD, And in His law he meditates day and night. He will be like a tree firmly planted by streams of water, Which yields its fruit in its season And its leaf does not wither; And in whatever he does, he prospers.
